Meet Mary Beth
Mary Beth, a 58-year-old from small-town Pennsylvania, was diagnosed with cancer in February 2023. While she was waiting for test results to come back, she noticed changes that led her to believe she might have cancer: “I wasn’t completely surprised when I got the diagnosis, but hearing “cancer” is still shocking. I felt numb for quite a while — it just didn’t seem real.” Mary Beth was matched with Lindsey, one of Jasper’s counselors. Having already completed chemo, surgery, and radiation, Mary Beth was most eager to rebuild her strength through nutrition and exercise.
“Going through cancer treatment, your diet and appetite changes completely. I was interested in learning about nutrition and good foods to eat.”
How Jasper helped
Mary Beth signed up for Jasper at the suggestion of a brother who works in the medical field:
“Jasper has given me a chance to talk about the little incidentals related to living a normal life and adopting a normal schedule. I feel comfortable asking questions that I might otherwise hesitate to ask during a doctor’s appointment.”
Mary Beth now considers Lindsey a trusted friend and says that their sessions have grown more relaxed as time has gone on. The two share a laugh every time they meet, and Lindsey’s expertise has helped Mary Beth regain a sense of optimism:
“Right now, I have all of the big steps behind me. Going forward, it’ll be about medication and managing side effects. I feel hopeful for the future.”
