In Treatment

Cancer treatment affects your whole life. We’ll help you develop a toolkit for monitoring the physical and emotional side effects of treatment, effectively advocating for your needs to your clinical team, and coping with the stress of treatment.

Cancer can feel like a full-time job. Jasper is here to help.

“Treatment side effects and fatigue make me feel completely wiped out”

“I don’t know what questions I should be asking during my oncology appointments.”

“Between treatment and my other responsibilities, I’m having trouble managing it all.”

What to expect in your first Jasper session

Meet Your Counselor

During your first session, your counselor will spend time getting to know you, what your life looks like, and where you need the most support. More than anything, your counselor’s main goal is to help ease the burden of having to figure everything out on your own.

Discuss Your Cancer Experience

Understanding your experience of receiving a cancer diagnosis and starting treatment informs how we’ll support you:

  • How were you diagnosed?
  • Did it take a significant amount of time to get an accurate diagnosis?
  • How are you processing your diagnosis?
  • How did you go about evaluating treatment options?

Talk About Your Support System

We’ll spend some time exploring what your support network looks like:

  • Do you need help talking to people close to you about the cancer diagnosis?
  • What are some tasks you think your support system could take on to help you?
  • Do you feel that your treatment is affecting your ability to work?
  • Are you interested in reaching out to support groups online or in your community for peer support?

Identify Your Challenges

We’ll talk through what you’re finding most challenging right now, with the knowledge that this will likely change over time:

  • What have you found to be the most challenging part of dealing with cancer so far?
  • What feelings or concerns does your diagnosis bring up for you?
  • What treatment side effects are you experiencing, if any?
  • What outstanding questions do you have about your treatment?
  • What are some things that bring you comfort or provide moments of joy?

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Jasper define “in treatment”?

Being “in treatment” describes someone who is actively pursuing interventions to shrink or reduce the cancer or stop it from spreading. This could include chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, immunotherapy, stem cell transplants, and more.

What type of care does Jasper offer?

Jasper specializes in supportive care, which focuses on everything that happens outside of your clinical appointments. Jasper’s care counselors help you with pain management, nutritional guidance, social support, preparing for appointments, understanding treatment options, and more at every stage of cancer treatment, from newly diagnosed to survivorship.

How is Jasper different from my clinical care?

Jasper does not replace advice or treatment from your clinical team. Jasper’s counselors support you through the emotional, mental, and physical challenges of cancer, but do not make clinical recommendations.

While your clinical team focuses on your diagnosis and treatment, Jasper helps you access quality care, vetted resources, and feel more in control.

How does Jasper help me prepare for appointments?

While our counselors are unable to make clinical recommendations, we can share vetted resources so that you feel more informed, and help you prepare questions for your clinical team so that you can go into each appointment feeling confident and empowered.

Are all your services virtual?

Yes. Jasper sessions take place virtually via video call, phone call, or online chat.

What will I work on with my Jasper counselor?

It’s up to you! Together, you’ll create a care plan tailored to your needs at any given moment. While we use your treatment stage as a jumping off point, you can ask your counselor for support with anything that feels important, like financial resource assistance, managing side effects, coordinated rides to and from appointments, having hard conversations with friends and family, and more.
